The Pont-rhyd-y-cyff viaduct a beautiful piece of engineering with its 8 large arches spans the Cwm Du valley, Llangynywd, near Maesteg. Built to carry coal by the Port Talbot Railway company, 1896. The route began in the neighbouring Garw valley and traversed the hillside into the Llynfi valley via Betws, Letty Brongu and Llangynwyd and over the viaduct towards Maesteg en route to Port Talbot docks. It’s a beautiful design which puts me in mind of the Great Western Railway engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, I can’t find confirmation if he was the bridge’s designer.
