Purpose:
I uploaded this in anticipation of writing a short stub article about Turda Gorge Romania. Wandering piranga 14:17, 20 December 2006 (UTC) Development:[reply]
I went thru this area on a birding tour of Hungary and Romania in May/June 2003.
On further exploration it appears this picture is not THE Turda Gorge but a pass about 10 km south on the same ridge near Rimetea. I found THE Turda Gorge is about 5 km west of the town of Turda, and is not something you can drive through as I did. In fact, my birding guide, Janos Olah, referred to the pictured gorge as Torotsko Gorge. (Torotsko appears to be the Hungarian name for Rimetea, not Turda as I had assumed.) Some sources refer to the Turda Gorges (in the plural), so this is getting more mysterious. See http://www.harta-turistica.ro/index.php?mod=object&obj=14766&lang=eng . Note on their associated map the gorge is only labeled in Romanian as "Cheile turzii" -- which is why it took this American a while to figure this out. Note, I was led to this discovery by consulting the "Rough Guide to Romania," which gives practical info and directions.
So, I may set this up for deletion, and give up on writing an article. If someone more knowledgeable would like to carry this further, that would be great. It's a beautiful, and appaently popular, area that is worthy of a Wikpedia reference.

A little more progress: I have now confirmed via the map of the Apuseni region in "harta..." above, that this is "Cheile Valisorei" (Hung. Kokazi szuras??) S of Rimetea. There is a paved road thru it and the map displays extensive rock faces (the gray areas per the legend) which is clearly what i followed on my bird tour in 2003 and photographed from a distance above. I added additional clarification on the main picture page. http://www.karpatenwilli.com/images/dia26.htm was very helpful, with some great photos. (text in German) If anyone has suggestions on where to go from here, if anywhere, I'd be happy to hear. -- Wandering piranga 02:36, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
