Burkard's uniform in pic. with iron cross sleeve insignia -- U.S. military??

[edit]

Private Burkard's uniform appears to carry the German iron cross insignia. Was this a concession to German-Americans in U.S. service? I have found no info. on 19th century U.S. uniforms to explain this. Could this be a German uniform, making the pic. one made prior to his MN engagement?

Also, the surgeon general's link yields a 404 error. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Webistrator (talkcontribs) 19:51, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He's wearing his Medal of Honor on his chest, so it's definitely a post-1898 uniform. The emblem looks more like a Maltese cross, which shows up in a later U.S. Army insignia here. I doubt it has anything to do with Germany. — jwillbur 00:01, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
