I believe this is fair use of this file. I created this from a screenshot size 900x900px and then reduced with pic rezier to 233x233 - It is now, as uploaded, a very small image and poor quality. Over the last couple of days I have requested copies of this (or similar from the Facebook page, the PDSA, BBC, ITV and the Guardian with none forthcoming. There are no pictures of this dog on commons or on flickr. As with all articles, a small picture in the infobox gives the reader a much better idea of the subject than text alone and in this case, it is important to see the dog breed and the award as "English Springer Spaniel gets PDSA Order of Merit" does not convey it clearly enough, particularly to those not familiar with dogs (and their many breeds) and the British awards. A small shot of the actual dog wearing the actual award is warranted in my opinion. JW 1961 Talk 20:00, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- The issue is with the replaceability, not the resolution or its use in the article. WP:NFCC#1 specifies whether free content could be created, a free image of this living dog could be created which would serve the same purpose. Dylsss(talk contribs) 20:51, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Dylsss, As I live in a different country (Ireland) than the dog and picture owner (United Kingdom) I cannot reasonably take a picture myself (apart from the fact that Ireland is under 5km travel restrictions until at least the end of March). Having already asked the owner, PDSA, BBC, ITV and Guardian I cannot easily obtain a licensed copy. As above, there are no free images on commons or flikr and so short of some other editor happening along that has rights to a similar picture I have exhausted routes to obtaining one. Should one of my requests for use of a picture come to fruition at some stage, I would immediatly replace this image on the article, where it's use is desireable per above. - The policy is not whether the uploader could create a free equivalent, it is whether a free equivalent could be created at all. Dylsss(talk contribs) 23:12, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Dylsss, In that case then every single non-free image could theoretically be replaced as of course a replacement could be created, which I feel is a different story than can be created for our use to illustrate an article. I'll rest my case at that and thank you. JW 1961 Talk 23:27, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Well no, you cannot create a free image of a deceased person, a building which no longer exists, non-trivial logos, posters, title cards, TV show characters, video game screenshots. Either because it would not serve the same encyclopedic purpose, e.g. because it would not be accurate, or it is not reasonably possible to do so, e.g. because doing so would infringe on someone's copyright, or because the subject itself no longer exists. It is both possible to create a free image of this subject, and it would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. Dylsss(talk contribs) 23:38, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- As said in WP:NFC#UUI
Pictures of people still alive, groups still active, and buildings still standing; provided that taking a new free picture as a replacement (which is almost always considered possible) would serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free image.
is unacceptable use. Dylsss(talk contribs) 23:41, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]- Thanks I read that, however Max the dog is neither a person, group or building. JW 1961 Talk 21:42, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
