The scale of this illustration is misleading. The trajectory lines imply that they are correctly related to Mars, when in fact, Mars is more than 3300km in diameter, so the distances above Mars surface are far to large (or Mars is too small.) On the other hand, the TCM occurred a week before arrival, much much further away than illustrated.
