No lakes are currently shown for the Narmada river. A series of reservoirs were planned and some have been built, among them the Sardar Sarovar Dam and Reservoir, which displaced thousands of people and led to long lived grassroots protest movements regarding indigenous/native people's rights by Indian nationals themselves. Indian dialogue, or narrative, on environmental issues is unique in being based on conflict over resource rights among people representing basic divisions of 'cultural progress' (hunter/gatherer, pastoralist, farmer, industrialist, post-). I imagine that The Narmada Valley projects, coming as they did at the time of emergence of environmental issues at the World Bank, galvanized a lot of the thinking regarding this unique dialectic in Indian discourse. it is in any case a perfect example of the type of conflict so described. Yet another dialectic emerges between "local" and "regional" interests that can be said to work in juxtaposition with the first.
