"The sun and moon at the top are present despite the Council of Constantinople prohibition of such symbology for its reference to other religions."

Cybrarian's note, chances are the sun and moon at the top represent all day and all night. Christianity is a relatively recent development and Christian Churches have been built over older temples and religions. I picture it like whilst the men were out hunting the women were back home decorating the cave. Mothers come from way, way, way back. Husband is a relatively recent innovation.
