Fair use
[edit]Fair use in Zippy the Pinhead
[edit]The use of low-resolution images of this illustration for/from a comic strip to illustrate the copyrighted character(s) or group(s) depicted on the excerpted panel in question where no free alternative exists or can be created constitutes Fair Use under US copyright law.
It appears that the entirety of this small illustration is used. It doesn't "compete with the copyright holder's usage" as long as it is used to show roughly who Zippy is, and no more than that.
I don't know for sure whether the resolution has been reduced; it's pretty small though.
The image isn't even slightly replaceable by a free content image, given that Bill Griffith, the artist of any authentic illustration of Zippy the Pinhead, doesn't release his illustrations either by GFDL or into the public domain. -- Hoary 15:16, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
