There are several recognised varieties of the Chongxi Tongbao. Some of these cash coins have the "tong" (通) written in "official" or "clerky" style (li shu 隶书). Other coins have the tong (通) written in "regular" or "orthodox" script (kai shu 楷书).

There is a "large character" (da zi 大字) variety which can have the "tong" (通) in either "official" or "orthodox" script.

There are also varieties where the "Xi" (熙) character is written slightly differently.

Some coins have a "moon" or "crescent" (仰月) above the square hole on the reverse side while other coins have a "star" (星) beneath the hole. These varieties are fairly rare on the market.

The Chongxi Tongbao cash coin more commonly has the "regular" tong (通) variety. The "official" tong (通) variety is scarcer.

    H 18 . 21      LIAO: Qian Tong yuan bao     Cash Two specimens with identical? calligraphy. I am suspicious of #2 because Tong tilts with the rosette center rim while the other characters do not. What does this mean? Other than this, the two pieces are more similar than their images indicate because #2 has been cleaned (except the edge) and is less worn. The interior metal color is comparable as are shape and patination of edges.
