Summary

Description
English: Yuchi Town. The archeological sites on Fort Benning, U.S.A., include both prehistoric and historic Native American sites. There is evidence of occupation or use as far back as approximately 12,000 years before present (BP). The most recent sites represent the last homes of the Muscogee (Creek) Tribe and the Yuchi (or Euchee) Tribe, both removed to what is now the state of Oklahoma, along the "Trail of Tears" in 1836. The Site of Yuchi Town, portrayed above (artist: Martin Pate, Yuchi Town, 1776, commissioned by the National Park Service) has recently been designated a National Historic Landmark. Artifacts such as glass trade beads, firearms, plus other trade and locally produced items have been recovered from the site by archeologists from the Smithsonian Institute and Fort Benning.
