Métaphore de la survie, la citrouille lui inspire beaucoup de respect. Motif récurrent dans son oeuvre, c'est à la fois l'aliment de base dans le Japon dévasté à l'issue de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la graine dont son père pépiniériste fait commerce.
