Summary

Description
English: The interaction of the wood-inhabiting fungus Xylaria polymorpha and pathogenic fungus Penicillium polonicum in dual culture is evidenced by the formation of an inhibition zone between their mycelial colonies. Such interaction requires certain metabolic properties of fungi, including the production of secondary metabolites, which change qualitatively and quantitatively and can be activated during co-cultivation.Such fungal antagonism could be one of the instruments for obtaining novel bioactive compounds, which are produced by a collaboration of the two fungi (or by one of them, but in noticeably increased quantities by co-cultivation).

Photo was taken during the experiment on antagonistic activity of wood-inhabiting Xylaria species against 6 pathogenic fungi in dual-culture assay. Xylaria strains used in this study were from the Mushroom Culture Collection (IBK) of the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
