Well defined annual rings are marked by small numbers of large xylem vessels (trachea) with many in early wood occluded with tyloses.
The bulk of the stem is composed of small, pale, thin and medium walled tracheids inter spaced with patches of dark heavy walled xylem fibers (labriform) and clear staining axial parenchyma.
Xylem rays of clear thin walled parenchyma cells are bound by darker staining heavy walled tracheids. Both narrow uniceriate and large multiseriate rays (12 to 30 layers) can be seen in Quercus.
