Description
Français : Illustration d'un épisode historique à valeur morale relaté par l'auteur grec antique Plutarque. Les habitants de Phocide sont en guerre contre ceux d'Amphissa. Des Bacchantes venues de Phocide, emportées dans leurs danses rituelles nocturnes en l'honneur de Dionysos, s'endorment épuisées sans bien savoir où elles sont. Au matin, elles se réveillent et constatent avec effroi qu'elles se trouvent sur la place du marché d'Amphissa, chez leurs ennemis. Mais les femmes d'Amphissa se regroupent autour des Bacchantes, les protègent et leur offrent le gîte et le couvert, en suppliant leurs maris de ne pas tuer ces étrangères sans défense.
