Description CHURCHILL, Winston S. (1874-1965). Cabinet photograph signed ('Winston' at upper margin), n.d. [1898], a studio portrait of Churchill in tropical uniform with pith helmet, spurs and sword before a backdrop depicting the pyramids, the image 192 x 125mm (200 x 132 with mount), by J. Heÿman & Co, 'Photographes de la Cour', Cairo, numbered '29104' on verso, some retouching around legs and feet. Provenance: Christie's South Kensington, 18 October 1990, lot 106. Churchill had, after great efforts, secured six months' leave from India in order to take part in the Sudanese campaign under Kitchener. The inscription with first name only is evidently to a close family member.
