Description
English: William Henry Groom was just thirteen when convicted of theft and sent to Australia in 1849. Granted a conditional pardon he eventually made his way to Toowoomba, Queensland. Elected as Toowoomba's first mayor in 1861, he served continuously in government until 1901. Groom was the only transported convict to be elected to Federal Parliament. In Queensland he was known as the Father of the House and carried the title to the Federal Parliament in Melbourne. He died while attending the first session of Parliament in Melbourne on August 8, 1901.
