Summary

[edit]

This image, taken February 26, 2011, looks northerly at the Mine Storehouse, built in 1940, that lies about 240 ft. north of Battery Varnum. The remains of the tracks that run into the south end of the building once served the tramway system that carried mines back and forth from the nearby wharf (where they were loaded on boats to be laid), to be loaded with TNT, or to be returned to storage when not in use. The tramway also served three other buildings, one of which, the Loading Room, is visible at lower right. Next to this are the Cable Tank building and an older Mine Storehouse. Currently, all of these buildings are in use, either by the State or by the Town of Jamestown.
