The rail lines in the map are coloured according to system. The Waterloo Spur, historically a part of the Canadian National and Grand Trunk, is coloured in blue to highlight it and also reflect its ownership by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo and use of the southern section for Ion light rail service. Active Canadian National lines (including the Guelph Subdivision, co-owned with GO Transit) are coloured in Canadian National Green of the 1940s to better distinguish them from CP lines. Canadian Pacific lines, both active and defunct, are coloured in Canadian Pacific Action Red.
Former streetcar lines, the abandoned northern section of the CP Waterloo Subdivision, the abandoned southern section of the CN Waterloo Subdivision, the abandoned CN Bridgeport Spur, short industrial spurs, yard trackage, stations (both current and former), light rail tracks (excluding the sections of the Waterloo Spur used for light rail), and proposed lines are not shown. Place names are not precise and are intended to give a sense of the historical centre of a settlement, such as Waterloo in what is now Uptown Waterloo, or Kitchener in downtown Kitchener. Only major rivers are shown, not creeks.
