Summary

Description
English: Ice house on at Walworth, County Durham, England, May 2010. It is on private property and not visible from the public highway. It was originally a cylindrical limestone-block structure with stone domed interior roof, set inside a mud bank and approached by a long arched stone passageway through the bank. The bank is now missing and the ice house exposed, probably because it is situated in an old quarry. The cylindrical ice-container is intact, but most of the entrance passage is now gone, due to collapse. The base of the cylindrical ice container is two feet lower than the passage, and the floor is flat, although this space is described as egg-shaped in the listing description. The building is late 18th-early 19th century and is Grade II listed. Showing present entrance to ice house, now that the long passageway has collapsed. You can see at the sides how it was set into the mud bank which is now mostly gone. It is probable that the mud bank helped to support the passageway, and after the bank was removed from the quarry, that loss of weight permitted the collapse. It is possible that the lack of the mud bank is continuing to weaken the structure.
