Summary
DescriptionWalton United Methodist Church, Main Street, Walton, KY.jpg |
English: Built in 1930, this Tudor Revival-style church was built to house the congregation of Walton United Methodist Church, also known as Walls Chapel, which was established in 1879. The congregation was previously known as Walls Chapel Methodist Church, dedicated as a memorial to Reverend John Walls and his wife, whom lived in Cincinnati’s Cumminsville neighborhood, and whose relatives, John Wall Murphy and his wife, had provided land for the original church with the stipulation that it serve as a memorial. The building originally featured a low-slope roof above the sanctuary enclosed by a crenellated parapet, though this was later modified with the installation of a hipped roof. The building is clad in red brick with a front-gable narthex, steel-frame stained glass windows, rustic fieldstone accents on the front facade, pilasters on the side facades and at the corners of the sanctuary, decorative limestone trim relief panels, a stone front porch with a gothic arched front entrance with a stepped parapet featuring limestone panels with the words ‘Walton Methodist Church” engraved into them, and a two-story rear addition with a low-slope roof enclosed by a parapet with a red brick exterior and one-over-one vinyl windows. The building remains the home of Walton United Methodist Church, and is one of the most unique church buildings in Northern Kentucky. |
