DescriptionWalter Nash visiting dental school in Colombo, 1958 (25236977974).jpg
Between 27 February and 1 April 1958, Prime Minister Walter Nash visited Australia and several parts of Asia. Nash’s main purpose in going overseas was to lead the New Zealand delegations to two important conferences: the ECAFE conference in Kuala Lumpur, and the annual meeting of the SEATO Council in Manila. He also accepted official invitations to visit Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Thailand.
On 21 March, Nash began a three-day visit to Sri Lanka, at the invitation of Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike. The photographs above show Nash at the dental school in Maharagama, Colombo, on his first day in Sri Lanka. These photos form part of Archives New Zealand’s Walter Nash collection.
Walter Nash was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1957 to 1960. After defeat in the 1960 election he remained MP for Hutt until his death in 1968. To view more of the Walter Nash collection, see our online exhibition: archives.govt.nz/events/walters-world-nash-collection
