English: William Rufus Terrill poses for a photograph in the dress uniform of a U.S. Army captain. In May 1861 Terrill was commissioned captain of the 5th United States Artillery; he was promoted to brigadier general in September 1862 and killed in battle the following month. Terrill's family supported the Confederate cause and disowned their Virginia-born son for joining the Union army. Three of his brothers fought for the Confederacy; two were killed during the war.
