An extinct relative of the elephant and a native of the Houston area

The American mastodon was a browser among the forests and woodlands of Ice Age North America. Mastodons differ in several ways from mammoths, most conspicuously in tooth and tusk structure. The tips of mastodon tusks do not meet the way mammoth tusks do. Mastodons have low-crowned cheek teeth consisting of a series of cones, whereas mammoths have high-crowned teeth that are more suited to gazing on the tough, alorasive plants of grasslands, savannas and tundras.
