Notes Notes from Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008: "A sternwheeler with double smokestack, hallmark of the Mississippi river steamer, plies its way upstream. ... As it approaches the narrows, it closes on a large raft--almost an anachronism on the river by mid-century. The raft is empty, its 'cargo' the logs with which it was constructed. It is a floating timber yard. ... Sometime in 1856-57 [Richardt] traveled westward to the Mississippi, where he made sketches of the river from Rock Island, Illinois, to St. Anthony Falls at Minneapolis.

"A scholar at the Minnesota Historical Society has suggested that View on the Mississippi depicts a spot at the head of Lake Pepin where the waters again narrow to the river channel."
