English: Veturnáttablót (Winter NightsSacrifice) on the First Day of Winter 2009. Icelandic neopagans, members of Ásatrúarfélagið, stand in a circle as they conduct a religious ceremony. The location is the land of Ásatrúarfélagið in Öskjuhlíð, Reykjavík. A horn is passed around and raised in honor of various entities. Libations are offered.
The man in the green and white ceremonial garbs standing by the fire on the right is Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, allsherjargoði (Common Chieftain or High Priest). He is holding a ceremonial ring. He is flanked by two priestesses. Around 40 people attended the ceremony, some are out of the frame on the left side. The weather was still but fairly cold. Apart from the high priest, participants are wearing normal winter clothing.
