Summary

Description
English: Response of a LED-LDR optoisolator (vactrol) to a step change in LED current. Note that time scale is logarithmic!
  • Blue trace: response of a vactrol that was kept dark long enough. Owing to memory effect (common to all cadmium compounds), it overshoots steady-state resistance, initially going to a low "infinite dark" resistance (Rdh), then slowly recovers to steady-state target (black dashed line). Most cadmium compounds take hours to settle down completely (below measurement error), although some take weeks.
  • Red trace: response of a vactrol that was kept brightly illuminated. It overshoots in another direction, to a higher-than-expected value (Rlh).
  • Increase in resistance (red trace) is typically slower than decrease (blue trace).
