Summary

Description
English: A watercolour painting of a Turkish coffeehouse, Istanbul, circa. 1809. The painting was commissioned by Stratford Canning a British diplomat who wanted to study Ottoman customs and institutions. He commissioned a Greek artist whose identity is now forgotten though he is believed to have been in the studio or circle of Konstantin Kapidagli. Although using European perspective, the watercolour techniques are Ottoman.
