English: US Army Signal Corps weather map from October 1872. The Signal Corps was given responsibility for weather reporting in 1870. By the time this map was prepared, it had established 78 reporting stations across the continent. The weather department of the Signal Corps, named "Division of Telegrams and Reports for the Benefit of Commerce and Agriculture" was transferred to the Department of Agriculture in 1891and became the U.S. Weather Bureau. |
