Description Loss of the U.S. Navy light aircraft carrier USS Princeton (CVL-23), 24 October 1944: Smoke rises from an explosion in Princeton's hangar deck at 1005 hrs. on 24 October 1944, shortly after she was hit by a Japanese bomb while operating off the Philippines.
