Title |
USS Arizona, Arrival of Sponsor, Navy Yard, New York, June 19, 1915. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
Arrival of the sponsor (the person performing the christening) at the launch of the USS Arizona in June, 1915. The sponsor was Esther Ross, the 17-year-old daughter of a pharmacist from Prescott, Arizona and chosen by Arizona's governor, and there were three "maids of honor". Two bottles were used, one of the traditional wine, and a second with water taken from the newly-opened Roosevelt Dam, which was a nod to Arizona being a dry state at the time.[1][2] |
