Summary

Description U.S. Navy midshipman are divided internally into 10 ranks. The first rank, Midshipman 4th Class, abbreviated MIDN 4/C, wears on the shoulder the insignia of a fouled anchor, no stripes on the coat sleeve, and no collar insignia. Midshipman 3rd Class, abbreviated MIDN 3/C, wears on the shoulder the insignia of a fouled anchor with one diagonal stripe, on the sleeve, a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) midshipman wears a horizontal gold stripe midway between the wrist and shoulder on the left sleeve, and a United States Naval Academy (USNA) midshipman wears a single diagonal stripe on the left sleeve, with a fouled anchor pin on the right collar. Midshipman 2nd Class, abbreviated MIDN 2/C, wears on the shoulder the insignia of a fouled anchor with two diagonal stripes, on the sleeve, a NROTC midshipman wears a two horizontal gold stripes, and a USNA midshipman wears two diagonal stripes on the left sleeve, with a fouled anchor pins on the right and left collar. Midshipman 1st Class, abbreviated MIDN 1/C, wears on the shoulder the insignia of a fouled anchor with a single horizontal gold stripe, on the sleeve, on the sleeve a NROTC midshipman wears a three horizontal gold stripes while USNA midshipman wears one horizontal stripe on each sleeve, with a fouled anchor and eagle pins on the right and left collar. Midshipman officers, starting with Midshipman Ensign, abbreviated MIDN ENS, wears on the a shoulder the insignia of a star with a single horizontal stripe, on the sleeve a stripe with a star, with a single gold bar pins on the right and left collar. NROTC Midshipman officers have shorter stripes on the sleeve which do not go all the way around the wrist. Midshipman Lieutenant Junior Grade, abbreviated MIDN LTJG, wears a shoulder insignia of a star with two horizontal stripes, on the sleeve two stripes with a star, with a twin gold bar pins on the right and left collar. Midshipman Lieutenant, abbreviated MIDN LT, wears on the shoulder a star with three horizontal stripes, on the sleeve three stripes with a star, with three gold bars pinned on the right and left collar. Midshipman Lieutenant Commander, abbreviated MIDN LCDR, wears on the shoulder a star with four horizontal stripes, on the sleeve four stripes with a star, with four gold bars pinned on the right and left collar. Midshipman Commander, abbreviated MIDN CDR, wears on the shoulder a star with five horizontal stripes, on the sleeve, five stripes with a star, with five gold bars pinned on the right and left collar. Midshipman Captain, abbreviated MIDN CPT, wears on the shoulder a star with six horizontal stripes, on the sleeve six stripes with a star, with six gold bars pinned on the right and left collar./U.S. Navy and Marine Corps midshipman rank structure.
