Object history From Dahomey, Africa. Offered as a gift to king John VI in 1811. Incorporated to the collection of the National Museum of Brazil in 1818.
Notes In the old Kingdom of Dahomey, this throne was called zingpo gandeme ("seat of the king"). This piece is a late 18th/early 19th century copy of the throne of the king Kpengla (1774-1789), grandfather of king Adandozan. The throne was presented as a gift - together with the cane, the royal sandals and the leather bag shown in the picture - from king Adandozan to the King John VI of Portugal in 1811. The objects entered the collection of the National Museum of Brazil in 1818.
