Text Appearing Before Image: Carmichaelia is shown by their abundantproduction of leaves in shady stations. (2.) Shrubs with an abundance of leaves, sometimes very thin, whenjuvenile, but of the cupressoid form when adult—e.g., certain Taxaceae(see Griff en, 1908), whipcord veronicas, and some species of Helichrysumbelonging to the section Ozothamnus. * The seed was very kindly sent to me by Dr. Eug. Autran, of Buenos Ayres, andthe seedlings were raised by Mr. T. W. Adams, to whom I am greatly indebted. f The divaricating form of Elaeocarpus Hooklrianus and the juvenile Pseudopanaxcrassifolium, with its thick, narrow, stiff, deflexed leaves, certainly seem out of place ina rain forest, where they are assuredly not epharmonic structures. ( Carmichaelia gracilis J. B. Armstrong is leafy in the adult ; it is a scramblingiane, and grows in wet ground or swamps. C. gratidiflora Hook. f. is deciduous, butabundantly leafy in spring and summer. C. odorata Colenso is also leafy. Trans. N.Z. Inst., Vol. XLIV. Plate VII. Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 1.—Aristotelia fruticosa. On left, juvenile ; on right, adult. MM
