Title
Tranchet axe
Description
English: A complete knapped flint 'Thames pick' type Tranchet axe dating to the Mesolithic period (c.9000 - 4000BC).

The object is elongated ovoid shape inplan with a roundedbutt and bladed edge. It is roughly D-shaped in cross-section although highly irregular. It is slightly wasted around its'middle of the object. The object has long flaking covering much of the object but with a patch of cortex along the middle of the facing without the tranchet flake. There is a small transverse flake along the edge of the of one face creating an edge at the wide end, this technique is generally associated with the tranchet axe industries of the Mesolithic. The conchoidal rippling associated with the flaking is mostly fairly muted suggesting the use of soft hammer technology, except near the patch of cortex possibly suggesting the utilisation of both techniques. There are some patches of more pronounced fracturing including hinge fractures on the tranchet facing, although likely accidental.

The object is mostly unpatinated and a mottled light off white/greycolour and some dark brown semi-translucent brown around the cortex.

Measurements: 103.76mm long, 43.33mm wide, 24.20mm thick, 157.27g in weight.
