English: An X-bar theory phrase structure tree of the sentence 'Bill is difficult for John to hit,' which illustrates tough movement, analyzed here as object-to-subject raising out of the embedded clause and to the main clause. The sentence is taken from Peter Rosenbaum's 1965 PhD thesis "The Grammar of English Predicate Complement Constructions" (page 194).
