English: The bothy lies on the A939 road from Tomintoul to Ballater, within a few miles of the Lecht Ski Centre in the Scottish Highlands. Nicknamed 'Toplis Cottage' by locals, the bothy was attracting tourists as early as Summer 1920. A report from the The Daily Herald dated August 20th 1920 reads: "Toplis Cottage - the lonely house in remote Tomintoul which was the scene of the shooting incident in which the notorious desperado figured - has become a place of pilgrimage for holiday visitors, Motor-cars conveying tourists to the cottage are being run from both Speyside and Donside, and, despite the out-of-the-way nature of the spot, many hundreds of curious sightseers have visited the cottage this summer. On the door of the building is inscribed the words, "Toplis Cottage." Several bullet-holes are prominently marked."
