English: Tomb of Thomas Hobbes One of the truly great English philosophers, he was laid to rest at St John the Baptist in 1679 when he died aged 91. He worked on a wide range of subjects including physics, mathematics and history, but is most well-known for his famous book 'Leviathan' in which he advocated absolute government and social contract as the only means of achieving order. This became the basis for Western politics and still forms the cornerstone of democracy today.
