164 TOM TEMPLETS CAREER, for me. I thought from his looks that he was a bold,spirited boy, but appearances are deceitful. A prettyguardian he is for property. This was precisely the opinion which Tom desired hiscompanion to have of him, as it was necessary for thesuccess of his plan that his suspicion should be dis-armed, and he be taken off his guard. The cellar into which they descended was used to storegoods of various descriptions, and presented to the glancea confused pile of bales and boxes, arranged withoutmuch regard to order. This is a queer place to keep money, said theburglar, looking round. Its a first-rate place, said Tom complacently, fornobody would ever think of looking for it here. I dont know but youre right. Well, where is it? In that little chest, said Tom, pointing to oneunder a bale. So its there, is it? said the burglar triumphantly.How much is there?
