Summary

Description

Thurles Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland

English: Tabernacle in the choir of the cathedral. This is assumed to be the work of Giacomo della Porta (1537–1602) which was originally created for the Church of Gesù in Rome where it remained for 300 years before it was replaced. Archbishop Patrick Leahy bought it while staying in Rome for the First Vatican Council. In Ireland, Connemara marble was used to replace the original tuffo stone. See Peter Galloway: The Cathedrals of Ireland, p. 204–205.
