Article | |
Portion used |
The whole image is used. It is a scan from a newspaper article. The image is small and of low quality overall, but as the only available image of the subject it makes a useful illustration of a person the reader would otherwise have no idea about concerning appearance. The image is more than ten years old and very unlikely to encumber any profits the newspaper in Charleston could have potentially made. |
Low resolution? |
The image is 137 X 215 pixels, a very low resolution. |
Purpose of use |
To identify a historical actor in the article Thomas Lavy. |
Replaceable? |
This newspaper scan is the only known digital image of the article subject, aside from what the family might own. This image was actually provided to the Post and Courier by Lavy's family, and, given that the article subject is deceased, it is unlikely they will be willing to freely license a family photo of their deceased loved one. |
Other information |
Despite the extremely low quality of this image it does add to the value of the article, it attaches a name to a face and allows the reader to actually see the subject of the article. |

Use of historic images from press agencies must only be of a transformative nature, when the image itself is the subject of commentary rather than the event it depicts (which is the original market role, and is not allowed per policy). | |
