Summary

Description
English: Portrait of Thomas, Lord Vaux. Black and coloured chalks on pink-primed paper, 29.1 × 20.6 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle. The drawing has been very badly rubbed and is clearly reworked. Traces of Holbein's original left-handed shading are, however, discernible in the hat. K. T. Parker, in his study of the Windsor drawings, attributed this "much injured" study to Holbein, noting that "the comparatively unscathed passage of the ear is finely drawn" (Parker, 44).

Thomas Vaux, 2nd Baron Vaux of Harrowden, was a poet, the author of posthumous verses in Tottel's Miscellany, 1557. He served as Captain of the Isle of Jersey. Holbein had drawn an earlier portrait of him, in which he is shown with longer hair. He also drew Vaux's wife, Lady Elizabeth. Reference
