hernparts of New Zealand. Common in Cook Strait. Genus Gradipus. Rissos Dolphin. Grampus griseus. No teeth in upper jaw, but three to seven on each side of mandiblenear to the symphysis. No beak. Pectoral fin long, pointed, falcate;dorsal fin high and falcate. Length from 10 to 13 feet. Grey, varying onthe fins and tail to black, and to white on the belly. Mainly Mediterraneanand North Atlantic in range. There is only one species in the genus.(Beddard.) As stated in the Introduction, Pelorus Jack is officially-gazetted as a Grampus dolphin. It is the only member of itsgenus recorded in New Zealand waters. Professor Beddardstates that the Grampus, like many other cetaceans, has no veryfixed limits to its range, and it mav go from the Mediterranean RISSOS DOLPHIN 63 and North Atlantic to southern latitudes during the winter. Headds that it is not by any means a common cetacean, and thatonly a dozen records of its capture on the English and Frenchcoasts are extant. It feeds on cuttle-fish.
