Description
English: Shogun was the title of the person who wielded the greatest military power in Japan. It was derived from the title Sei-i-taishogun, which means ‘the general who defeats the barbarians’. Originally, the Shoguns’ duty was to fight rebellious people in the north of Japan. Later, the name shogun was used to designate the leading figure in the military governments that ran Japan for centuries. In Japanese, this form of government was called ‘bakufu’ or shogunate. After a short war, the last of the Shoguns stood down in 1868 and this marked the end of the shogunate.
