The raft was built of about ten largelogs, fifteen feet long, firmly bound together withropes, which, shrinking in the water, became verytight after a short time. Branches were laid cross-wise to keep our blankets and provisions above thewater, and this pile of stuff made a place for two ofus to sit upon. The other two sat on boxes forward.Each of these managed an oar which had beenroughly hewn by Fred Stephens. Some crosspiecesnailed together and to the side of the raft with steelspikes, which we had brought for the purpose, madeoar-locks. Our raft, with four of us, carried a burdenof more than a thousand pounds. Many speculationswere made as to the time that would be required toreach the other end of the lake, and these ranged allthe way from six hours to three days.
