a Scene of IRuggefc desolation 241 oclock. The gloom of early dawn, the morningchill, and a clouded sky had no cheering effect onour anticipations. Our plan was to traverse themountain-side till we should come to the south-east shoulder, where we had once observed theoutline of an apparently easy slope. At eleven oclock, we had reached a height ofnearly ten thousand feet and came to a vertical wall,about four hundred feet high, a barrier that com-pletely defeated us. At the base of this cliff therewas a narrow slope of loose broken limestone, andbelow this, another precipice. Utterly defeated inour attempt by this impassable barrier, I walkedalong the cliff base into a semicircular recess in alast vain reconnaissance, while Allen took photo-graphs of the scenery. Here I had a few moments of quiet contempla-tion of a scene that in its awful solitude has lefta deep impression on my memory.
