Summary

Description
English: The Music Room, Sun Street, Lancaster This was built as a garden pavilion c.1730. The garden belonged to 76 Church Street and was later sold off and built on. The room that gives the building its name occupies the whole of the first floor; it should really be called the muses room, as the walls and ceiling are covered in plasterwork depicting Classical muses and gods, and Roman emperors. When Pevsner visited it he thought the plasterwork was beyond repair, but the Landmark Trust took it on. First the buildings in front of it were purchased and demolished and the flagged square lad out. The roof and windows were renewed, and the ground floor turned into a shop. The repair of the plasterwork took 6000 man-hours, and included a complete replacement of one muse. The top floor is now a holiday flat that can be rented for a weekend or mid-week break.
