Summary

Description
English: A rare picture of Guglielmo Marconi's Poldhu, Cornwall transmitting station showing the actual antenna used in the first historic transatlantic radio transmission on 12 December 1901. Marconi had originally constructed a large aerial consisting of 400 wires in an inverted cone shape, supported by a ring of twenty 160 foot wooden poles. This antenna collapsed in a storm 17 September 1901, and Marconi hastily erected the temporary antenna shown here, consisting of 50 wires in a fan shape, supported by a cable strung between two 160 foot poles, which was used in the experiment.

Belrose contends this image is actually retouched, created from an earlier photo (The Marconi Company first antenna system at Poldhu) taken of the larger circular antenna by erasing all but two of the poles of the previous antenna and adding lines representing the fan shaped wire elements. There are no other images of the actual antenna used in the transatlantic experiment, as Marconi quickly replaced this temporary antenna with a more sturdy permanent antenna in the form of a 400-wire inverted pyramid supported by four wooden lattice masts.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
