English: The Church of St James, Spilsby The church was originally built in the 14th century. It still houses tombs from the 14th to the 16th century and memorials of the family who originally obtained the Market Charter, the Willoughby de Eresbys. All but the tower was extensively rebuilt in 1879 and faced with Ancaster stone.
What is now the Willoughby Chapel was once the Chancel of the old church. Not long after the first church was completed and still in the 14th century it was altered and turned into a Collegiate church until 1547. A tower was added and the church retained its appearance until 1879. In that year not only was the church faced with Ancaster stone, but considerable changes and additions were made inside as well. The roof of the central aisle was raised several feet and two rows of clerestory windows added in the new upper walls. A new aisle was added on the south side and the back of the church was extended in line with the west wall of the tower. There are effigies to be found in the church, and tablets commemorating three notable brothers of the Franklin family, one of these is one of the greatest sailors and explorers of the 19th century, Sir John Franklin. Spilsby was his birthplace 1786. In 1845 he set out in search of a north west passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific between Greenland and Canada, but never returned.
