Description
English: The former Chinese Garden at Duke Gardens in New Jersey.
  • The serenity bridge crossed a koi stream surrounded by rock formations, with bamboo and camphor trees.
  • Doris Duke designed this garden to illustrate the small private Chinese style gardens that many wealthy Chinese families created in the early 20th century.
History
  • Duke Gardens featured distinct designs inspired by diverse cultures and regions of the world for 11 Indoor Display Gardens. Italian, Colonial, Edwardian, French, English, Chinese, Japanese, and Indo-Persian designs wereare juxtaposed near desert, tropical, and semi-tropical greenhouse environments.
  • In 1958, Doris Duke began a six-year process of designing and creating the display gardens. She traveled the globe seeking specimens and ideas to complete the gardens, which she first opened to the public in 1964.
  • On May 25, 2008, the Indoor Display Gardens were closed indefinitely by the Trustees of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
