Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) The Beatles' 1966 tour of Germany, Japan and the Philippines
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) The pictures of the Beatles' arrival in Tokyo show the band dressed in the happi coats of the national airline, JAL, and have been described by The Japan Times as "an iconic image of the Beatles' visit" to the country. Their attire was instigated by JAL for promotional purposes – a reflection of the Beatles' immense international popularity, their influence as unofficial cultural ambassadors for Britain as recently appointed MBEs, and Japan's wish to modernise its culture and so re-establish the country on the world stage two decades after World War II. In this respect, the picture encapsulates a tour that has been likened to the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, the 1964 launch of the Bullet Train, and the 1970 Osaka Expo with regard to Japan's postwar efforts to gain international acceptance. The picture also shows the four band members glaring into bright lights, waving blindly at what they assume must be a welcoming committee of their fans but in fact they were surrounded by police and security personnel. Their confusion was reflective of the strict security measures taken to combat the death threats made against them by ultranationalist groups, who were opposed to the Westernisation of Japanese culture. The success of the Beatles' visit, despite this opposition, was seen as inspiring a new direction for Japan's youth and more progressive-minded citizens, hence the iconic status of pictures such as this one.
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
No free image exists nor could one be created that captures this real-life, historic cultural event. The band members were instantly recognisable young men in their twenties; 50 years later, two of the four are deceased.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) This file will only be used in this article dedicated to the first leg of the Beatles' 1966 world tour, of which Japan comprised one of only three stops on the itinerary. It is the only non-free image needed in the article. Although the image has been cropped slightly, the majority of the 1966 picture is needed in order to establish the visual context of the four band members against the JAL aircraft, and the nighttime setting interrupted by the bright lights. The resolution of the image is sufficient to allow only for recognition of the photograph and its subject.
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
The resolution of the image is sufficient to allow only for recognition of the photograph and its subject. The file has been saved at the smallest size possible to permit this while ensuring that the copyright holder's interests will not be affected. The image is not of an adequately high resolution or file size to permit copies to be made that would be of sufficient quality to enable an illegal copier to use commercially.
